The 2006 Season - The Wildcard is Steven Jackson

In what was perhaps the most exciting GOBFFL Championship ever the Wildcards come from 25 behind to end up winning by 14. Both teams had all their players going in the early games which sure made an exciting few hours. It boils down to this though, Steven Jackson. The man poured on more then 30 points in the seconds half to give The Wildcards their first GOBFFL Championship. The Tankard now has a new home.

2006 Season most memorable moments and Interesting Stats:

First Round Pick comes through
Unlike the previous 2 years the first round pick for the Wildcards came through big. Steven Jackson was a work horse and he delivered in a huge way for The Wildcards in the Championship game.

2006 No Trades - the year we all held pat hands, but Murph had the Wildcard!
The first time in league history where there was not one trade the entire season. Not even an attempt that was denied! Not attempt at all to improve teams. Unless your were the Wildcards or the Irish you have to be thinking, "what else could I have done earlier on to improve my team?"

Damage Inc. and the Lottery
2 years in the league and they have never known what it's like to pick anything other then 1st. Security measures around the Lottery in 2007 will be tighter than ever!

Power Rankings don’t lie!
4 out of the last 5 years, as long as it’s been tracked, the number 1 ranked team in Power Poll has won the Championship! This year the Fighting Irish and Wildcards were number 1 and 2 in Power Rankings. Their wins were dead even on ties and losses edged the Irish over the Wildcards. Through in the fact that they were the two teams standing in the end and you'll come to the conclusion the Power Rankings still seem to be telling the tale.

The struggle continues for the Wackers and the Bangers!
If we are looking at Power Rankings then the Wackers and the Bangers have been struggling the last 2 seasons. The Wang Bangers have been at the 11th spot 2 years in a row and the Wackers have been at the very bottom, the 12th spot for the same 2 years. Even though they squeaked into the playoffs this year, The Bangers haven't been the same team since the year of Voodoo, apparently they still have some repenting to do. The Wackers had an excuse in 2005 with their bizarre curse of injuries, in 2006 they missed the draft to marvel at the still playing Favre. No excuses in 2007 for the Bangers or the Wackers, get up off the mat!

Laughable Moments:

  • The Woodchucks draft Curtis Martin
  • The Beavers take Torry Holt with the 5th pick of the draft
  • The entire Raider Offense (Lamont Jordan, Randy Moss)

Team Wrap ups

The Wildcards
It was a long time coming but well disserved for the Wildcards. Steven Jackson was the key. A well rounded in team in all positions except, once again for a champion, at the QB position. Each week with that depth the Wildcards were able to continue to pour on the points. Not only did they win the Championship but they won total points champ as well, barely edging out the Woodchucks. Congrats to the 2006 GOBFFL Championship Wildcards!

The Fighting Irish
What a year for the Irish. You could definitely make the argument that this was the best team in 2006. You have to wonder if they could have made it all the way with McNabb healthy. Surely they could have traded Brees for some fantasy help had McNabb stayed Healthy. Still a well picked draft and a great Season. Brees will probably end up being the best Fantasy pick for where he went in the draft.
Definitely the best drafted team of 2006. If Steve Smith had not disappeared in the playoffs, again, then the GOBFFL Tankard would be in the hands of the Irish.

The Lunt Avenue Blunts
Another almost season for the Blunts. Com paired to the other top backs, Rudi Johnson was a disappointment, as was Eli Manning. Another good season and another good team, it just wasn't enough to get past the Wildcards in the Rum Divisional Championship game.

The Kranky Rodeo Klowns
Ladell Betts was big for the Klowns after Portis went down. Palmer was also consistent enough for the Klowns to be a contender. Alas, in the end The Fighting Irish and that pats Defense put an end to the Klown's season in the Whiskey Divisional Championship game.

CreekersRodGuzinut
The Creekers second trip to the playoffs in only 2 years of play in the GOBFFL. A team with Peyton Manning is always a force to be reckoned with. But Manning's unbelievable play dwindled as the season went on. Brian Westbrook was still good, but the Eagles offense just wasn't as good without McNabb. The backs were very good for the Creekers all year long, but despite some moments with Houshmandzadeh the Creekers had some holes at Wide Receiver.

The Woodchucks
At least the Woodchucks can end the season knowing they had the best Fantasy Player in LaDainian Tomlinson and his record breaking TD year. However, perhaps the best Fantasy performance ever won't get The Woodchucks to finals. Harrison was so disappointing this year, he had his moments but was never consistent. I still say, as with the Atlanta Falcons, you can't win a championship with Michael Vick as your go to QB.

Damage Inc.
Larry Johnson was the number 2 pick, not the number 1. LT outscored him by over 100 points already this season. Tony Romo was a great pick up this year for Damage and got them into the Playoffs. But it wasn't enough. LJ was about the only consistent weapon for Damage and it takes more then 1.

Da Kamehameha Wang Bangers
Maurice Drew and Travis Henry? This team was built off Free Agency. Utah did a good job in the market but it takes some solid draft picks to get you into the finals. The Biggest trouble for this team was the loss of Portis. Still they were able to survive with their free agency RB pickups. But they were very inconsistent at WR and almost as inconsistent was QB Tom Brady.

The Ribbed Trojans
1 win over the last 4 weeks of regular season and they would have clinched a spot. Culpepper went wrong to start. This team couldn't find a quarterback worth starting after Haurd went away. Tack on a disappointing season from Edgerrin James and Carnell Williams and you have yourself a busted season.

The Peagram Beavers
The Beavers will finally see what it's like watching from the stands as the playoffs roll around. The beavers dropped their last 3 games. Holt and Bulger disappeared the last 5 weeks. They were the bread and butter and once they started failing so did the Beavers. That Torry Holt first round pick almost looked smart... almost. The Beavers can keep telling themselves that while they watch the Wildcards take their Tankard.

The Super Chargers
It's too bad they couldn't have gotten a few wins earlier in the season, they look primed for the playoffs right now. The Super Chargers were last year's Busch Wackers with their injuries. The Madden Curse doomed them from the start. Alexander, Gore, and Fitzgerald are the only starting players coming from The Super Chargers draft. They were able to put up some points but they all came from Free agency. Frank Gore was about the only good thing that came out of The Super Chargers 2006 draft. MADDEN CURSED

Anheuser Busch Wackers
Things don't seem to be getting any better for the Wackers. Another rough season for them. Don't miss the draft next year, however a Packers Preseason Game is a valid excuse. Jake Delhomme was definitely a disappointment all year long, although not as bad as Lamont Jordan, the biggest Fantasy Bust of them all. Add that all up with Julius Jones sub par season and it equals another long off season for the Wackers. Sorry man, better luck next year.

The Top 2006 Draft Picks:

The top 5 picks are only my opinion, but for the round they are taken in I think these teams disserve some credit for some great draft picks!

1. The Fighting Irish – QB Drew Brees in the 8th Round, 86th overall pick
The 2nd best fantasy QB in the 8th round! What a story book season Brees had and what a fantastic pick by the Irish.
2. The Super Chargers– RB Frank Gore in the 8th Round, 84th overall pick
What a fantastic pick by the Super Chargers. Some how I don't think Gore will be sliding past the 1st round next year. Getting him the 8th was a such a steal!
3. Ribbed Trojans– DEF Baltimore Ravens in the 11th Round, 129th pick overall
The top Defense at the 11th round. Gotta get some credit for that!
4. The Fighting Irish – WR Lee Evans in the 10th Round, 110th overall pick
The Irish snag the 5th best Fantasy WR in the 10th round, not bad, not bad at all. .
5. CreekersRodGuzinut – QB Jon Kitna in the 11th Round, 126th pick overall
Kitna was fairly consistent last year and put up decent numbers. He was the 6th best QB but never saw any time in the GOBFFL last year because the Creekers had Manning. So his performance, at least in the GOBFFL, may have gone unnoticed. Regardless, it's a good pick up in the 11th round.

There are fantasy gems everywhere in any round of the draft!

2. RB Maurice Drew - Da Kamehameha Wang Bangers
3. RB Ladell Betts - Kranky Rodeo Klowns
