The 2005 Season - The year of the Beaver

In what seemed to be a unanimous cheer for the greatest GOBFFL season ever, all teams had a shot at the title right until the bitter end. But it was the Beavers who finally got a championship!

It was the closest race ever. In the last two weeks every team had a shot at making the playoffs. Even in the final week, we didn't know who would have top seed or who would be out. It came down to points in the end.

2005 Season most memrable moments and Interesting Stats:

First Round Pick over rated?
The last 2 years the 2004 and 2005 Championships teams didn’t even use their 1st round picks!
In 2004 the Wang Bangers took Kevin Barlow with their first pick in the draft and ended up dropping him due to injury and suckyness.
In 2005 The Beaver took Duante Culpepper with their first pick in the draft and dropped him due to injury, even before he was injured he was useless.
So the last 2 years the champions didn’t use their 1st pick? Bizarre!

No RB in the first round? Not to fret
Along with the first round not mattering the last 2 years, this marks the first time a team has NOT taken a RB with their first pick and has won the GOBFFL Championship. So next year were all drafting WRs and QBs in the first round right?

Bah QBs? We don’t need no stinking QBs!
Going into the final game of the 2005 season both the final 2 teams picked up QBs off Free Agency to start in their final game!

Power Rankings don’t lie!
For the last 4 years, as long as it’s been tracked, the number 1 ranked team in Power Poll has won the Championship!

The Cursed Wackers!
Their first 2 draft picks with season ending injuries, and besides Kickers, Defense, Reuben Droughns, Jake Plummer, and Eric Moulds are the only players on the Anheuser Busch Wackers team to play the whole Season. Well done job to have done as well as you did this year Wackers. Please do not draft LT next year, I am a big fan and I don’t want him hurt.

Team Wrap ups

The Peagram Beavers
The Championship game for the Beavers was a big one and it’s the most combined points ever scored in the Final game, previously held by these two teams in 2003. Perhaps only slight less important then a GOBFFL Championship for The Beavers is their first win over The Super Chargers. A team that has, until now, dominated The Beaver in every game they have played. Regardless, it was the Beavers the pulled out a win. If there is one thing The Beavers proved this year it’s that you don’t need a QB to win a Championship, you just need to luck out with The Best Fantasy player the last half of the season in Larry Johnson. The Beavers definitely had some help along the way this year. It was arguably the best pick in the draft by snagging Larry Johnson in the 8th round. The Beavers also got some help from the first opening 2 week dominance of Stealer RB Willie Parker, which then the Blunts wanted bad enough to give up Tory Holt. A little Fantasy craftiness and a lot of luck got The Beavers their first GOBFFL Title, way to go Beavers!

The Super Chargers
What a year for Steve Kimball’s Super Chargers. They are now the only team in Whiskey to take the Whiskey Division Championship twice! They also now have arguably the most impressive listing of League Honors. The Super Chargers are the only team currently to hold a spot in every Honor Category: Total Point Champ, League Champion, Top Seed, Division Champs, and top Power Poll Ranking. It’s been another impressive year for The Super Chargers. Alas, they couldn’t go all the way.

The Wildcards
On a whole, the Wildcards have to be happy with their team this season. Santana Moss disappeared that last few weeks as well as Vick was never up to par. But how could they not be happy with Fantasy juggernaut Shawn Alexander. Alas, Alexander the Great was not enough to conquer the world on his own. This season did return The Wildcards back to the playoffs after a 2 year lapse and in what was the most competitive season ever that’s something to take with them to next year.

The Ribbed Trojans
One could only wonder how far this team would go, when owner Matt Bradley didn’t even show up for the Draft. Still I believe in stats and numbers, and The Trojans are always a competitive franchise. Brees turned out to be, once again, a reasonably good fantasy QB. McGahee has to be one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy this year. Where the Torjans were really strong was in their WR core. With Harrison, Fitzgerald, and Houshmandzadeh he has arguably the best WR group and definitely the hardest last names to spell with Fitz and Housh.

The Fighting Irish
I really thought this would be the year for the Irish. I knew they were playoff bound when they snagged Steve Smith who I had on my top WR spot. I thought he would slip farther but the Irish knew better then to wait on such a steal. Matched with Peyton Manning it was a good supporting cast, good enough to make them total point champs! The RBs just couldn’t pull through though and Fred Taylor is about injury prone as they come. Definitely the best year the Irish have ever had even though they miss the rest of the playoffs. Congrats Irish on an awesome season in the most competitive year we’ve had yet.

Captain One Eye’s Ball Movement
You could say much of the same for Ole Captain this year as we did with the Irish. Probably their best season to date. Grabbing Barber and James was certainly a great move. Those top 5 backs kept this train a rolling. Favre however was the weak spot on the team and was ultimately his demise. Congrats on a great season Captain. I am already anticipating what will happen to this team if no Favre is available next year? Will Aaron Rodgers go that high in the draft? =)

Kranky Rodeo Klowns
Well the Klowns aren’t the only ones who had a first Round pick bust, but it still hurt them as Jamal Lewis was just not the same back this year. As far as first years go, you couldn’t really ask for a better one. They played spoiler to Damage Inc. who thought they were in. The Klowns finished strong the last part of the season to grab a spot, no doubt the comeback team of the year. Well done on a great first season Klowns!

The Woodchucks
I for one was really interested in the Furry Woodland Critter Bowl between the Woodchucks and Beavers but it was not meant to be. The Woodchucks were stopped just 7 points short by the Wildcards. Hasslebeck, Westbrook, Cadillac, and Moss… It sounds like a decent crew. Moss was non-existent in the last of the season, Westbrook went down with the Philly boat, and Cadillac was injured a lot as well. In the end, chalk it up for another great Woodchuck season where they fell just short.

The Lunt Avenue Blunts
Where did things go wrong? They looked like they were on their way to a 2nd consecutive point championship and then things just fell apart. Perhaps what hurt the Blunts the most was the injury to Marc Bulger who, at the time, was the number one Fantasy QB.
This will mark the first time in Blunt Franchise History that they don’t make the playoffs and the first time to have a losing season. Even with a 10 point lead over teams in Rum, they missed the post season after being the top scorer in Rum and 2nd in points overall.

The Anheuser Busch Wackers (The Cursed)
What else is there to say about the Wackers 2005 season that hasn’t already been said. All Josh can do in the off season is bathe himself in Tomato soup to rid himself of the injury curse that has plagued him this year.
In 2004 the Wackers plague began, but it was a full epidemic in 2005. Still after all those injuries the Wackers were competitive all season long.
The Wackers may have an edge in next years draft if they can get a high enough pick. They can use that draft pick to threaten fans of top fantasy players to make a monster trade. Could you imagine what The Super Chargers might do to move up to save L.T. from the Wacker Curse? Although after this year, teams may just draft the Wackers backups early in the draft.
My tip for you Wackers would be to Google “Ridding of curses” and see what you can come up with. Good luck my cursed friend.

Damage Inc.
It looked like first year Damage Inc. were bound for the playoffs with 3 weeks to go. After losing 3 in a row it was not meant to be. Unfortunately even first pick and fantasy juggernaut, LaDainian Tomlinson, wasn’t enough to secure Damage a playoff spot. Curtis Martin was a bust this year for Damage. Coles and Mason were a joke as well. At the beginning of the year it looked on paper to be a good team. What it boiled down to though, was Tom Brady and LT weren’t enough to get the job done without a better supporting cast.
Still, all things being considered, it still wasn’t a bad year for Damage. It was just too damn competitive this year. Better luck next year Damage.

Da Kamehameha Wang Bangers
The Banger’s Voodoo in 2004 was undeniably the most Dominant Fantasy season ever presented by a team. The Bangers Voodoo in 2005 just wasn’t the same. The Bangers sported the top two Fantasy QBs in FF, McNabb and Palmer were money for the Bangers. The bangers also had some decent backs in Brown and Davis. It just seamed that their Voodoo wasn’t consistent week to week.
I know the rest of the League will rest easy this year knowing that the playoffs won’t come down to a sacrificed animal. Still the Bangers went out with a Bang. They were the week 13 high and their Defense scored a fantasy record 42 points. Of course it was on Monday night when they needed a miracle to win their game, we would expect nothing less from the Bangers. Alas, the Bangers Season will come to an end due to points. They will end up 89 points short of the playoffs. Better luck next year Bangers.

The Top 2005 Draft Picks:

The top 5 picks are only my opinion, but for the round they are taken in I think these teams disserve some credit for some great draft picks!

1. Da Kamehameha Wang Bangers – QB Carson Palmer in the 7th Round, 81st overall pick
The top fantasy QB in the 7th round after 3 went in the 1st? A great pick by Johnny Utah and probably the best overall pick.
2. The Peagram Beavers – RB Larry Johnson in the 8th Round, 91st overall pick
Larry Johnson ended up the number 2 spot behind Shawn Alexander, but only because Priest Holmes played the first 6 games. In the 8th round it’s a Fantasy dream pick.
3. The Fighting Irish – WR Steve Smith in the 3rd Round, 26th overall pick
I just thought this was a brilliant pick from The Irish, I had Steve Smith very high on my draft board as well, but the Irish didn’t hesitate in what they deemed correct as the top WR in 2005.
4. Kranky Rodeo Klowns – DEF Chicago Bears in the 13th Round, 149th pick overall
You would have to feel good about snagging the top Defense in the 13th round of the Draft
5. Captain One Eye's Ball Movement – RB Tiki Barber in the 3rd Round, 34th pick overall
So many people passed on him, but not ole One Eye! Barber was an absolute steel the deep into the 3rd round.

Lesson Learned: There are fantasy gems everywhere in any round of the draft!

2005 Top Free Agency pickups

1. K Neil Rackers – Lunt Avenue Blunts
2. QB Eli Manning – The Super Chargers
3. DEF New York Giants – Lunt Avenue Blunts
